This is an annual cultural celebration that takes place on the first Saturday in the month of August in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at historic Malcolm X Park located at 52nd & Pine Street. The celebration honors the memory of our brother Ahmed Akil Tahir (Former owner of The Pearl Of Africa/Gates Of Zion Culture Shop and Founder of The Nation Of African Peoples Unity) who’s idea and inspiration gave birth to the Afrakan Independence Day/Ma’at Celebration which first took place in August of 2004 and was an outgrowth of the organization The Nation Of Afrakan Peoples Unity. The celebration also recognizes the Ancient Kemetic principles of Ma’at and it’s 42 Declarations which focus on the importance of truth, justice, balance, order, righteousness, reciprocity and harmony amongst ourselves, our families, our community and within our daily lives.
