Brother Sam was correct. Cherry was just oblivious to the Greek. The word Λόγος is a masculine noun, so grammatically αὐτοῦ in vs 3 is just agreeing with the gender of Λόγος in vs 1 and Οὗτος in vs 2. It (logos) could also be called it. That's just greek grammar. The Λόγος doesn't become a person (flesh) until vs 14.
As a matter of fact, all manuscripts before the KJV had an "it" instead of a "he".
