The dap is more than just a handshake, it’s a symbol of solidarity, one with a long and proud history behind it. The origins of this greeting trace back to young Black American soldiers stationed abroad during the Vietnam War. With racism prevalent in the military and a new Black consciousness emerging during the civil rights movement, the young soldiers developed a physical language as a gesture of unity. Thus was born the dap, an acronym for “Dignity and Pride.” Photographer LaMont Hamilton has been studying the historical impact of the dap in his series “Five on the Black Hand Side,” telling the story of how the handshake came to hold such a profound place in Black culture.

Its funny that those obsessed with Dignity and Pride lack it . Even blacks will tell you that their number one oppressor these days is other blacks. Faux educated libtards like to coddle those unaccomplished masses that crave the product of success but lack the discipline and will to achieve it.
Enriching! Learnt something new today!
This dude got a PhD in dap
Well you learn something new every day, never even thought about it but the history behind such a simple thing is really quite deep.
I bet he makes the best secret handshakes
The history of the handshake dates back to the 5th century B.C. in Greece. It was a symbol of peace, showing that neither person was carrying a weapon. … Some say that the shaking gesture of the handshake started in Medieval Europe. Knights would shake the hand of others in an attempt to shake loose any hidden weapons.
This is not correct! It originated in AFRICA!! You need to do your research bro.
I see people around the world using the dap but most of them don't know where it originated from.
Get a real job lol
I thought this was a Liberian handshake

What a joke🤪
So that's why America lost Vietnam, the black people were to busy shaking hands.
I just find it interesting how things like this travel around the world. I'm not from America, I ain't from no hood, I ain't even Black but for some reason I grew up already doing this stuff, i didn't even know it was called a "dap".To me it was just how we shook hands.
Very interesting.
You lost me when dudes started doing ballet leaps. Like really bruh.
Mom: Oh, he's going to be a software engineer!
Son: 1:17 Studies handshakes for a living
Especially during the Vietnam War–brothers bonded. Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Zachery, you've done an outstanding job. Although you probably were not born when brothers served in Nam, you give much credence for the black soldiers who served in Vietnam, bringing the black historic concepts to younger and future generations. I grew up during the war and I remember watching the brothers doing the DAP and it seemed as if the entire handshake lasted at least five minutes. As a kid, I was amused but respectful as well.
why do i feel like he made this story up?
White 'Nam vets were involved with the Dap as well. It was a beautiful thing.

"Dignity and Piece" = DAP; I'd never heard that before. That's cool! I learn something new everyday!
This guy is always asking me for a dap. He’s actually really cute, light skin with gray eyes.
dap? more like crap amirite #coolbeans #hashtag
literally every black dude in my school does this
Well I appreciate what he's doing but that's not what they were doing in Vietnam. Surly someone could come forward and show him.
The dapping started in Vietnam and I witnessed it especially in Phu Cat. Black kids had these incredible long dapping sessions and greetings that I don't think most people have seen. I think the original dap was shortened dramatically after the war. Vietnam was the cutting edge of pop culture in many areas. Why war brings this out I can't understand.
I was watching Great Big Story videos for hours now, and I thought do they have a video about dap handshake (very popular in CA especially in the bay area) and sure enough
So… it's basically just a secret handshake.
Different handshakes have been used by every culture in the world. Please shut up
