We’re continuing our exploration of conflict theories with W.E.B. Dubois, who is one of the founders of sociological thought more broadly and the founder of race-conflict theory. We’ll discuss shifting ideas about race, Dubois’ idea of ‘double-consciousness’, and the modern day field of racial identity. We’ll explore the idea racial formation and discuss Dubois’ survey of African Americans in Philadelphia to look at how economic, political, and social structures affect how we perceive different races – and vice versa. We’ll also discuss the activist side of Dubois’ life as co-founder of the NAACP and editor of the Crisis, and how modern day sociologists study racial politics and racial resistance.

Me and Du Bois on our way to fight racism
the bois
Very well put!
Du Bois also wrote science fiction! His “Twilight Zone”–esque story, “The Comet” from 1920, explores racism in the context of a cataclysmic event. (It can be found in “The Big Book of Science Fiction,” Ann and Jeff VanderMeer, eds.)
I thought it was pronouced "Deh-Boa" like French

This girl loves plaid
Did she mention that he lost one of his scholarships because the school said he'd use his education to benefit his race?
The part about racial resistance and Feminist Movement… I don't really understand. By saying "Its key issue was exclusion of women from workforce. Entering workforce was seen as a form of resistance", did she mean that in this movement, women demand to be put in the workforce (instead of staying at home and only man can involve)? If so, shouldn't it be "Being excluded from the workforce was a form of resistance"? Someone help me please ))):
They should have never let them loose. Democrats had ot right the first time. And oh look..them negroes vote for them now. How did that work out?
OMG, You speak Hella fast! please slow down so I can grasp it.
Your short videos on great sociologists are real gems. I use them in my classes. Keep them coming. Can you do one on Jane Addams, one of the other founders of American Sociology?
Is anyone else annoyed by the fact that she’s pronouncing Dubois wrong? It’s pronounced “doo-bwah”
Please don't glorify this evil man he is a reason why we have paper genocide that man did not want anybody anybody having true identity he was right up underneath those other white colleagues until they announce did am and then he look like a real fool
Irish and Italians were allowed in white only toilets. They weren't considered Teutonic, because they weren't and aren't, and america was founded for Teutonics.
Even if they were not considered, white, that would make no difference, because humans were once not considered animals, but it is a fact that they are. They would juts be wrong, or defining the word differently. If we define a white person as a member of a population native to Europe, then the Italians and Irish were always white.
Thanks maam
Your not going to mention W. E. B. Du Bois and his Relationship with Kwame Nkrumah or Marcus Garvey? Not going to mention his contributions towards Pan Africanism or Black women (which is related to gender theory)? Strange to omit that, or not make an episode on that?
Is that how you pronounce Dubois?
I just appreciate the concept of sociology and how the studies express life with honesty backed with empirical evidence. I always spoke like this and never understand, even today, why it isn't common sense but apparently we need a whole social science, in which, I 'm grateful for the framework. In society now one of the concepts about an " African American" and how we come to be called one is so profound because this description and what is attached have made my experience in America, one of an oppressed people. It is even worst when you do your lineage and find out that these are false. The outrage is inevitable but I do believe healing from race relations will only come through truth, from these social sciences, and our individual truths we choose to live by and display in everyday life.
One of these days…it will be different.
you are a legend! Thanks!
why can't libs mention when someone was a communist?? mention it when they believe in the liberation of the human race. Dubois was a communist, don't erase his history. he campaigned for nuclear disarmament and was tried by the federal government and had his passport confiscated. Libs are great for pointing out problems and do nothing to solve them. Liberation for the Working Class☭☭☭
The good ones are American but the bad ones aren't. And the bad ones includes hackers in online multiplayer.
… this video is well made but I hate having to watch stuff like this for university. I get so angry at human stupidity.
He was also was one of many informants the government had to inform them of progression in the black communities
Hey Marcy are you sure you can trust this woman
I'm just annoyed by how she keeps saying dubois rhyming with moist instead of dubois similar to doo-b-wah I couldn't make it past a minute.
I have been looking everywhere to find out which Sociological Approach W.E.D Du Bois used. I was thinking it was most similar to Conflict theory used by Marx but instead of focuses only on class structures (and the inequality them stems) it was also on Race struggles. Thank you CrashCourse now onto my assignment.
I really enjoy (and more importantly, learn from) this Crash Course series. Thank you for dedicating your time to this. It’s highly appreciated.
Is this for the AQA specification?
Sociology is one of my favorite subject
In other words The White Devil is holding them back.
Talk about Latin Americans.
I really like your style. Where did you buy your shirt?
They forgot to mention Mexicans….!!!! Racial conflicts
Can we fight the system now instead of each other?
Imagine.
In that long glowing list you forgot to mention he was a Communist
Fences is a good movie to watch after seeing this video
I am in love with the host😍
She speaks way too fast.
It's ya boi Dubois.
What if racial inequality is just the result of IQ inequality? Has anyone ever considered that? The average black american IQ is 85 which is well-below the average white/asian/asheknazi.
Go Charmander!
