Residents of Ile-Saint-Denis, a commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, took to the streets on Monday to protest against police brutality.
Police were deployed on site to block the protest.
The rally was called by dozens of organisations and associations.
France Interior Minister Christophe Castaner announced on Monday that an investigation has been launched into the actions of police officers in Ile-Saint-Denis for their alleged racist behaviour. A video footage released on social media on Sunday shows police officers reportedly apprehending a man who jumped into the Seine to escape arrest and using the word “bicot,” a racially derogatory term for North Africans.
