Demonstrators were tear-gassed by police forces as they rallied in Paris on Tuesday, to protest police brutality against black people and to demand justice for Adama Traore and George Floyd.

The protest in the French capital quickly escalated after police pepper sprayed a demonstrator at close range. Clashes followed and tear gas was fired. Protesters subsequently dispersed. Several fires were started.

The demonstration is part of the “Justice for Adama” and “Black Lives Matter” movements and is expected to take place in front of ‘Tribunal de Paris’. Adama Traore died in police custody in July 2016, after he was arrested while riding his bike with his brother in Beaumont-sur-Oise, a small town north of Paris. According to reports, he died having been transferred to the police station, after already complaining of problems with breathing.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Houston native, died in Minneapolis last week after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, “I can’t breathe” and “Don’t kill me.
