Protesters took to the streets in Los Angeles on May 27, shutting down a major highway and burning an American flag in solidarity with similar protests in Minneapolis and across the country.

The demonstration by Black Lives Matter-LA and others began peacefully downtown Wednesday afternoon but then some protesters moved onto U.S. 101. George Floyd died earlier this week when a police officer put his knee on Floyd’s neck while he lay with his face against the pavement, until he lost consciousness.

The protests followed demonstrations in Minneapolis that resulted in violent confrontations between police and activists.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has called for criminal charges to be laid against Floyd’s arresting officer, identified as Derek Chauvin, who was captured in a disturbing video kneeling on Floyd’s neck.
