As a surge of a progressive candidates of color see victories in Democratic primaries across the country, we speak with former Bronx middle school principal Jamaal Bowman about his upset victory over New York Congressmember Eliot Engel, the 16-term Foreign Affairs Committee chair. Bowman ran on a Green New Deal, Medicare for All platform and recently joined protests demanding an end to racism and police brutality. He says his upset over Engel came down to mobilizing people who are “disenfranchised and ignored” by the political establishment. “We didn’t just target those who consistently vote in primaries. We targeted everyone,” he says. Looking forward, he describes his support for Palestine, a rent strike and police accountability.

Booker 'lost' due to rampant voter suppression. Besides shutting down 95% of the polling places just before the election, and shutting the doors at 6pm, the county clerk of Fayette County said 6,000 ballots were 'rejected'. Booker was up by 6 points that morning, then suddenly down by 3—think those 6,000 rejected ballots played a part? How many others were rejected? Utterly disgusting.

Eliot Engels was simply working to protect Israel as chair of the foreign relations committee. That is the main reason Nancy, Hillary, Schumer and Cuomo were endorsing Eliot. Jamaal is wrong on cancelling rents. He said it himself. A good percentage of landlords are small mom and pop operations where they have purchased a rental or two to help with retirement funding. He says that they will be protected by mortgage forbearance but that is wrong. IF tenants are not paying rent landlords can not show income and when it comes time to rework their mortgages at the end of the forbearance period they will be foreclosed upon. Governors and senators like to do what is popular but they are destroying lives in the process. IF tenants were legally working they get unemployment insurance topped by $600 per week and should be able to pay rent. Many, many who are not paying their rent plan on simply disappearing and will never reimburse their landlords. It is a national disgrace.
