Marcus Garvey is a well-known, historical figure. We know he was born in Jamaica on 17th August, 1887 and that he and his fist wife, Amy Ashwood Garvey, formed the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) on the island in 1914 then opened a branch in New York when he migrated there in 1916. What is perhaps less well-known is just how important the UNIA was and the extent to which it seized the hearts and minds of black people, not just in the USA but in Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, Africa and other places around the world as well.
This video tells the story of the UNIA and of the achievements of a Jamaican boy, the great grandson of a slave, who grew into the man whose impact is still being felt today, almost 150 years after his birth.
