Syracuse, N.Y. — A crowd of at least 1,000 people marched down South Geddes Street. One of its leaders, Shakira Neal screamed into the receiver of a megaphone.

The Henninger High School senior had led the Cuse Youth Black Lives Matter protest from Clinton Square to the Strathmore area and through the Near West Side.

Her voice started full, a call of strength. But as the march wore on, her chants became scratchier — less of a chant and more of a plea.

“By any means,” she called out.
