They should show him footage of the tanks infiltrating the city streets. There is a video where a protestor stands in front of a tank and the soldier gets out of the tank, points his gun at the protester and says βmove or we will kill youβ. The similarities between this specific incident and the beginning of the Tiananmen Square massacre was terrifying. It was a moment in which I did not recognize my own country. Our government should not threaten us with death for standing up to them. The US government seems to be increasing its use of authoritarian style force and many of us citizens are worried what this means for the future. Iβm not sure Americans have ever been this genuinely afraid of a dictatorship or fascist takeover happening to our country as we are now.
I'm not saying the police were right to handle the situation how they did, but the police were violent, because oftentimes the protesters were violent. You can protest all you want, but you don't have the right to burn down the city and destroy peoples' livelihoods and communities.

I'm still trying to understand how nonblack people don't get why we get 'violent' during civil rights protests, but I can say as a black girl who's grown up seeing this stuff on the daily, that we as a people are tired, and not a single thing in this country, not even himan rights, were given to us willingly.
