As expected, the powerful tropical storm Isaias swept north, bringing with it numerous fancy tropical birds.

Among the confounded unintentional travelers were sooty terns — more at home in the Dry Tortugas and the Yucatan — that ended up at Lake Pontoosuc near Pittsfield, Horseneck Beach in Westport and Wachusett Reservoir in Clinton. Accompanying them in the heavy winds were a brown noddy — a common Bahamas resident — and a long-tailed jaeger, which winters off Argentina and southwest Africa.
