Austin philanthropist Ada Anderson speaks as part of a panel in 2007 at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. The pioneering civil rights activist died Thursday at the age of 99.

Ada Cecilia Collins Anderson, civil rights activist and arts advocate, has died at 99, after a life of many firsts and of giving back to educational and community institutions in Texas.

Anderson died Thursday in her home of natural causes, according to relatives and family friends. Memorial plans are still being finalized and more information will be available Monday, said Johnnie B. Rucker Vandyke, a cousin who described her “as an amazing woman with quite a legacy.”
