An average of eight protests per day occurred in South Africa in July, the highest in a single month since 2013, data from the Institute of Security Studies (ISS) has revealed.
“A worrying trend is the substantial increase in the number of events over the past couple of months. From 1 to 26 March, before the lockdown, there were 42 demonstrations, an average of nearly two a day,” wrote Lizette Lancaster, Manager, Crime Hub and Godfrey Mulaudzi, Researcher, Justice and Violence Prevention at the ISS.
