Sen. Roland Burris gave his colleagues a Juneteenth history lesson.

‘Throughout the world, Juneteenth celebrations lifted up the spirit of freedom and railed against the forces of oppression.’

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed that the Civil War was over and that they were freed.

‘The long march to freedom that started on June 19 is far from over.’

This speech, given a decade ago this week, continues to ring true for activists and demonstrators across the country who are protesting police brutality and systemic racism.

Activists are also calling for Juneteenth to be named a federal holiday.
