In US news and current events today, June 19, 1865, marked the end of slavery and a turning point for Black Americans — here’s why Juneteenth should be recognized as an official holiday, according to NAACP President Derrick Johnson.
What is Juneteenth? Many white Americans have never heard of this holiday, which marked a turning point in the end of slavery and celebrates the day that slavery was abolished in many states at the end of the Civil War. After the police killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black people in America, the resulting George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality, police racism, and police violence have put systemic racism in the spotlight as BLM protesters take to the streets in support of police reform, racial justice and civil rights. The BLM protests and resulting dialogue has led to new awareness of Juneteenth, explained by many companies taking a stand and recognizing the Juneteenth holiday after decades of silence. Any Juneteenth explanation will be difficult to capture the complex emotions the holiday represents, but either way, it’s good and important that Junteenth is finally being recognized.
