“As demonstrators across America fight to liberate black people, whether through calls to abolish the police or through legislative action against systemic racism, the country is getting ready to celebrate the 155th anniversary of one of its earliest liberation moments: Juneteenth.
A portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth,” Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that they were free from the institution of slavery. But, woefully, this was almost two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation; the Civil War was still going on, and when it ended, Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger traveled to Texas and issued an order stating that all enslaved people were free, establishing a new relationship between “former masters and slaves” as “employer and hired labor.” As much as Juneteenth represents freedom, it also represents how emancipation was tragically delayed for enslaved people in the deepest reaches of the Confederacy.”

Moving to Texas
did john fart at the 2 minute mark
In Australian High Schools (Back when I was in High School) this was briefly covered in our Social Studies class.
The Emancipation was covered & that it took 2 years for the message to reach Texas & a day was marked as Jubilee Day. (Later known to me through my own interest in further learning on the subject as Juneteenth)
But yeah, Australian schools taught basic American History in our Global History lessons.
Obviously we got taught way too much British History here too plus a very Whitewashed version of our First Nation’s People history.
Celebrate. Educate. I remember a story from about two years ago about a woman who took a guided tour of a plantation; she was ticked of by the fact she was being educated on slavery, while all she cared about was.. furniture.
We need to make this a federal holiday!
Why didn’t Obama make Juneteenth a National holiday
As a Texan, where this started, this has always been a huge celebration here
Politics are now nothing more than a rhetorical cockfight
No, we need to explore What slavery was like after it was illegal. Only God and Satan knows what those slave owners did to those black men women and children when they knew that it was going to come to an end soon.
I support the idea of a day celebrating the emancipation of slaves. The day deserves a holiday. However the name is dumb as hell.
So here's a very short version of the origins, or is it oranges, of Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the day a Union Army general gave federal orders proclaiming that all slaves in Texas were free. The 13th amendment, abolishing slavery, was ratified on December 6th 1865. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation officially outlawed slavery two and a half years earlier, but Texas did not free the slaves there until June 19th 1865.
Slavery is not ended just moved to prison system
I found Bolton's e-book on The Pirate bay… free download… do NOT pay to find out what this COWARD was hiding from the Tax Payers of America… get it for FREE!
THAT'S NOTHING TO CELEBRATE. SHIT HAVEN'T CHANGED. IT HAS TECHNOLOGY NOW.🙄
I'm Canadian and we've been celebrating Juneteenth for years… hilarious your racist presiDUNCE didn't know what it was !… xD
From North Carolina,I paid attention in History classes I thought and unfortunately I've never heard of it. Until last month
I'm Canadian and I remember learning about Juneteenth in my American history class in high school. It's sad that our schools teach more about this than American schools do.
All wives matter.

Gday from Australia, I guess I learnt about Juneteenth from the first episode of Watchmen. Now I know more than your dear leader.
Good luck guys
I kinda understand Hawaii doesn't, since it was illegally annexed and shouldn't technically be part of the US. I wouldn't blame Hawaii for boycotting all federal holidays
All I hear is the education that I got it on the East Coast for the b******. I didn't know about Juneteenth until I move to Washington State. In fact I did learn a lot about real history that actually correlated with the crazy stories that my father told me did everyone else that wasn't true cuz he was a drunkard. Anywho you keep talking about this like every black American knows what the f** you're talking about but the realization is have a Black America don't know where Juneteenth was and yeah Donald Trump get the point for recognizing it and disrespecting it all at the same time
FYI could correct the typos but I'm pissed and f*** you

JUNETEENTH. Commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is observed on June 19. The celebration originated in Texas when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston. He announced on June 19, 1865, with General Orders, Number 3 that the Civil War was over and all slaves were now freedmen.
Hello from Canada. I have just learned about Juneteenth. So sad that your President is so full of himself that he shows no compassion for the families who have suffered. Stay strong my friend hopefully this pandemic will be over soon. Sending all Americans good vibes. .
Celebrate freedoms as we are more enslaved than ever.
Instead of being owned by an individual, your new master is the system.
The division which is being used to distract from the day of reckoning that is coming.
The system is about to devolve into chaos.
Slavery did not end on june 19 it ended on December 6 with the 13 amendment. Would you celebrate independence day on April 10? No right because that's not the day it happened. You are a news organization at least get the facts right. You also are saying let's learn about slavery then give inaccurate facts about slavery
I was never taught about Juneteenth in school. I learned about it later in life. Doesn’t seem right. From a very small sample size, which has no significance whatsoever, folks I know from states west of the Mississippi seem to know about the date, while those from the East less so. I wonder if geographic location and knowledge of this event have any correlation? I know it sounds a bit bizarre….but I’ll throw it out there anyway.
I admit, I too hadn’t remembered about this date and it’s significance until just recently, nor do I recall ever being taught about it in high school and I’m 42 years old, something is wrong with that picture, wouldn’t you agree? Education and knowledge is power and it’s awesome!
Yay JUNETEENTH. THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS RAPED AND TORTURED AND ENSLAVED AND EVEN KILLED THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT NATIVE AMERICANS! 🍻🍺🍷🍹😊 BUT YA HAPPY JUNETEENTH
DIDNT EXACTLY BURN RUBBER ON THEM JOKES, J.R.
You'd think these people would be grateful they were freed and Americans fought and died for them but instead they have a chip on their shoulder and want to perpetrate gang violence
I hadn’t heard about it until 3 weeks ago. They need to get rid of Columbus Day for Juneteenth or make it Indigenous People’s day or do both.
It's always been a bit sickening to me that the US has a national holiday for Christopher Columbus, that mass murdering xenophobic psychopath who didn't even set foot in what is the United States today — but doesn't celebrate or commemorate Emancipation at all. Weird priorities.
