Did you know that November is Black Consciousness month in Brazil? For Afro-Brazilians, November is a month where they reflect on how their ancestors survived 350 years of slavery and devise strategies to continue their resistance against racism. It’s commonly known as Mês de Consciencia Negra, Black Consciousness Month, or November Negro, Black November. It is not Black History month, nor black culture month. During this month, debates, lectures, awards ceremonies, and festivals fill the calendars of anyone who loves and respects Afro-Brazilian culture, resistance and history. I’ve spent the last four years celebrating Black Consciousness month in Brazil and I’ve come to cherish it even more my own country’s black history month. Let me explain to you why.

Or Toussaint Louverture for Haiti. By the way, I was so happy to read that more and more Brazilians are self identified as Blacks, more than ten million changed their race to black. Pretty soon Blacks will be in majority, and we might finally see Black elected officials, including a black president.
