On June 26, 2023, WTTW hosted Black Voices: A WTTW News Community Conversation. Chicago Tonight co-anchor and Chicago Tonight: Black Voices host Brandis Friedman moderated a virtual conversation with community leaders who discussed the unprecedented and controversial move from 10 years ago when officials decided to close 50 public schools in 2013. The panel featured, Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor of the South Side’s 20th Ward; Cecile DeMello, executive director at Teamwork Englewood; and Natasha Dunn, executive director of Black Community Collaborative. The panel discussed policy implications and explored the impact of school closures on the students and their communities a decade later.
