Her organization is part of a nationwide campaign called “You Can Save Lives.” It’s an effort to tackle the fentanyl crisis, but Burleson said it’s also to make amends for previous mistakes she’s made. “I have a daughter struggling with drugs,” Burleson said. “I’ve done time at the Department of Corrections. I used to be a drug dealer.”At the time, she didn’t realize how much damage she was causing. But wants to make things right now. The goal of this campaign is to provide resources for people who are struggling and educate black communities on the importance of Naloxone, or Narcan. “This is a life-saving drug and everybody should have access to it,” Burleson said. “We also want to let the community know about the resources that are around.”Those interested can order Narcan on their website here. She says New Mexico ranks as the sixth state in the country for drug overdose. In addition, Burleson says the overdose rate among black youth is triple compared to other communities in New Mexico.Her organization, Women in Leadership, is offering Narcan to those who may need it. As she reflects on the past she once lived, Burleson says she wants to take accountability now for the sake of saving future lives. “I’m raising my grandkids,” Burleson said. “I’m worried about the future. It’s about prevention now.
