Legendary Black golfer and Augusta native, Jim Dent, dies at 85

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Jim Dent died at age 85 on May 2, according to the PGA Tour.

Dent grew up in Augusta and attended Laney High School, and was one of the best Black Golfers of his time, according to the PGA Tour.

Dent was recovering from a stroke, however, he attended the Masters three weeks before his death, observing the 50th anniversary of Lee Elder becoming the first black Masters player, according to the PGA Tour.

He was a member of the African-American Golfers Hall of Fame, and the city of Augusta renamed the road leading to the Patch Jim Dent Way in 2020, according to the PGA Tour.

He appeared in the PGA Championship six times.

Dent caddied the Masters before he turned pro.

He was inducted into the Caddie Hall of Fame in 2022.

Mayor Garnett Johnson released a statement on Kent’s passing saying, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of legendary Augustan and trailblazing golfer, Jim Dent. From his early days as a caddie at Augusta National Golf Club to his remarkable career on the PGA Tour Champions, where he secured 12 victories, Jim broke barriers and inspired countless others. His induction into the Caddie Hall of Fame in 2022 stands as a testament to his enduring impact on the game. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his legacy. He will be truly missed.”
