AUSTIN, Texas — New signs were unveiled at Bethany Cemetery in East Austin Saturday, honoring its significance as the city’s first black cemetery.

The signs, unveiled as part of a Juneteenth event, include QR codes that help visitors learn about the lives of the community and the land.

Many buried at the Bethany Cemetery were some of the first residents of East Austin, and many lived through enslavement and in Austin during the first Juneteenth holiday.

“We hope in the future, we can actually tell the stories of the people at Bethany Cemetery that have been forgotten,” Jasmin Gardner of the Bethany Cemetery Association said at Saturday’s event.

The creation of the new interactive signs was possible through support from the City of Austin Economic Development Department’s Heritage Preservation Grant Program.
