The West Virginia University Police Department (UPD) issued a Community Notice, Monday after at least one black bear was spotted near campus.
The bear was seen near the PRT central maintenance facility located at 99 8th St. Officers were unable to spot any bears upon their arrival at the scene.
Black bears are not often aggressive, and attacks are rare, according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR). If you encounter a bear, call 911.
The WVDNR additionally recommends that if you notice a bear before it sees you, to not approach the bear and to stand still before moving slowly in the opposite direction.
If a bear does see you, do not run from the bear. The bear may begin to chase you if you run. Slowly back away from the bear and wait for it to leave, the WVDNR recommends.
The WVDNR also said to be aware of your surroundings, to keep dogs leashed and not to allow them to chase the bear.
In an emergency, call 911.
