This Historically Black Church Is a Pillar of the Community

In honor of Juneteenth, MCM visited the historic Pleasant View Church in Gaithersburg’s Quince Orchard neighborhood—a site that once included a church, schoolhouse, and cemetery serving the local Black community during segregation.

Founded by formerly enslaved African Americans after the Civil War, Pleasant View became a place of worship, learning, and resilience. Though time has changed the area, efforts to preserve its powerful legacy continue.

This is an MCM intern production.
