RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – On this week’s KOTA Cares, we’re highlighting the Autism Society of the Black Hills, where they’re striding to make life good for those who are on the autism spectrum, along with their families and caretakers.
The Autism Society of the Black Hills was founded in 1997 by parents, professionals, and community members to connect and empower individuals in the autism community.
This nonprofit provides programs and support for children and families, including social activities throughout the year and a summer camp every June.
“That’s one of our biggest things of the year, our summer camp, because it just gives you that support and community where you can, as a kid, feel like you can do those things and feel safe. We have a great group of staff; they’re local educators, so they’re very caring and compassionate, making it a great environment, said Autism Society of the Black Hills co-founder Katrina Worthington.
The organization is now focusing on a growing need for support for teens and young adults on the spectrum.
“We’ve found that when they get to 13-14, middle school or high school, there’s not a lot offered in the community. So, we’ve been trying to create more opportunities. For example, on the third Thursday of every month, we host a bowling night at Meadowood. It’s a place for people to come together, and what we’ve found is that kids start showing up regularly. Soon, they become familiar with one another, and the parents begin interacting too, said Autism Society of the Black Hills president Ruth Conway.
In addition to the summer camp, the organization hosts monthly events, such as a bowling night and support Sunday, to foster connections among teens and adults on the autism spectrum.
Advocating for individuals and loved ones with autism can be challenging and isolating, but finding a support system in the Black Hills may be easier than you think.
“We have monthly support groups where we bring in different speakers, or sometimes it’s just parents meeting to talk and share experiences. It’s a reminder that ‘I’m not alone.’ We also offer a Zoom option for those who can’t attend in person, because we understand that if you’re home with your child, it can be hard to get out.”
The Autism Society of the Black Hills is more than just an organization. It is a support system for those who need it most.
As the Autism Society of the Black Hills is affiliated with the Autism Society nationally, all donations stay in the Black Hills area and go toward the families and others associated with autistic individuals who need an extra hand with resources.
