LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The 100 Black Men of West Texas stepped up to give back to the community on Saturday, hosting their annual fishing derby at Mae Simmons Lake.

It’s one of the biggest events for the organization, and the biggest and longest-running fishing derby in the state according to the Texas Game Warden’s Association.

Drew Spencer, one of the Texas Game Wardens who helped fund this event, says he loves meeting members of the community and seeing people outdoors and off technology.

“Getting the kids away from cellphones and video games and out there with their families enjoying the outdoor events,” Spencer said. “And just to let them know, police officers – we’re the helpers, we’re the good people in this world, so to interact with them, shake hands and introduce ourselves, ask them about the school year coming up, it’s just a wonderful event.”

Scotty Scott with the 100 Black Men of West Texas says this event is designed to not only bring the community together, but to offer help the community may not have known about otherwise.

“Just different organizations and businesses of tomorrow’s leaders, just offering information and resources to the community as well that some community members might not be aware of,” Scott said. “So just an opportunity for everyone to mix and mingle, learn things they may not be aware of, anything they catch they keep, you get free lunch, free fishing, I don’t think you can beat it.”

Heenan Johnson, one of the original founders of 100 Black Men of West Texas encourages everyone to get involved with the community in any way they can.

Johnson believes time with your family is one of the most important things we have.

“Even if you can’t participate with this, take a kid fishing. I mean parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends, that kid would always remember that. I’m sure they will,” Johnson said. “I can remember when I first started going fishing…it was a big thrill and I just couldn’t wait to do it.”
