Reclaim and remain is the theme of a new exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California.
The history collection explores how Bay Area Black communities were displaced, resisted, and are now reclaiming and creating their own spaces of belonging.
“In this moment when history is being erased in many places and the continuing loss of Black community space is ongoing, we felt like this was the moment to tell this,” Oakland Museum of California Director and CEO Lori Fogarty said.

A powerful new exhibit at the Oakland Museum is shining a spotlight on vibrant black communities in the East Bay. The exhibit is called “Reclaim and Remain” and tells the story of how black communities resisted displacement. A group of working homeless mothers calling themselves Moms 4 Housing illegally occupy a vacant, corporate-owned home in West Oakland. The moms say it’s time to start a movement fighting back against rising homelessness, inequality, and corporate housing speculation in Oakland. With the aid of activists and community members, the moms make the first move in what would become a two-month struggle against a large Southern California home-flipping corporation.
