First Black principal appointed at Stone High School

STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) – A soul-touching choir helped ring in a new beginning of leadership at Stone High School; Cyntria Young is now principal.

While Young is no stranger to administration, this new role carries a special meaning.

“I’m honored to be the first African American principal at Stone High School… I absolutely will not be the last. I feel like I am a trailblazer, blazing a path for other students, other people who look like me, and for those that don’t look like me,” Young said.

Education runs deep in Young’s family; her mother and grandmother were also teachers. She has great respect for the role families have in the learning process.

“I want parents to know that I have an open-door policy. I would appreciate them coming to speak to me if they have concerns or if they would like to help. I’m always available to the public,” Young said.

Young was recently promoted from assistant principal.

“I’m excited that she is the new principal because I have grown up with her and known her all my life,” said senior Chimere Haley Wells.

Wells said Young becoming principal has a deeper meaning for her and those in the school district.

“She’s just setting her stone like, so someone in this community– a little young Black girl– can be like ‘I can be the next Black principal,’ and she’s just showing that Black people can conquer other things,” Wells said.

Surrounded by friends and family, Young and the rest of the church congregation lifted prayers for a safe and productive school year, beginning August 1.
