Black-owned restaurants prepare for 10th Madison Black Restaurant Week

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The 10th annual Madison Black Restaurant Week is coming up, and WMTV got a preview of some of the local black-owned restaurants participating this year.

From August 10 to the 17th, participating restaurants and food shops will offer special discounts, menu items, or dining experiences as part of Black Restaurant Week.

“We want you to find some new favorites and to visit them and support them and really bring them into your palette and friendship circles,” said President and CEO of the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce Camille Carter.

The week is a chance for people to support local Black entrepreneurs and chefs, while also trying new food spots, serving plates ranging from soul food and barbecue to Ethiopian and Caribbean cuisine.

“What gets me the most is actually seeing someone eating and enjoying my food,” said Nicollette Beckford, head chef at Fya Syde Kitchen in the Wisconsin Dells and Madison. Beckford is originally from Jamaica and serves Jamaican-inspired cuisine at Fya Syde Kitchen.

“Sometimes I’ll just stand there and watch people, all that stuff is what makes me happy.”

The Black Restaurant Week, hosted by the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce, also connects Black business owners with one another.

“If we help each other, we can achieve more together than separate because what I know, I can probably tell someone else, and I can also learn from someone else too,” said Beckford.

The week kicks off on August 10 with the $5 Food Taste Jamboree at Warner Park, where attendees can meet the chefs, learn more about the food, and try samples.

Mid-week, on Thursday, August 14, there will be an heirloom collard greens tasting at the Black Business Hub.

Finally, a farm-to-table fundraiser soul food brunch wraps up Black Restaurant Week, celebrating its 10th anniversary and initiating a conversation about food justice.
