MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Dane County Executive Melissa Agard announced Monday that August will be recognized as Black Business Month in Dane County.
Black Business Month aims to celebrate the innovation, leadership, and economic contributions of Black entrepreneurs in Dane County, as well as reaffirm the county’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable business environment.
Agard said multiple organizations in Dane County are working to expand access and remove barriers for Black entrepreneurs. The Madison Black Chamber of Commerce offers training, advocacy and promotion, while the Black Business Hub serves as a support space and innovation center for Black-owned enterprises.
Agard said the Black Enterprise Fund, along with UW-Madison Extension’s entrepreneur services including WARF UpStart accelerator, expand access to things like funding, mentorship and technical assistance.
“Black residents have strengthened our communities and enriched our lives,” Agard said. “This month is about more than celebration – it’s about recognition, investment, and action. Black-owned businesses reflect the creativity, perseverance, and leadership that help drive Dane County forward.”
Black entrepreneurship is on the rise throughout the country. Dane County officials said recent data shows the number of Black-owned businesses grew by over 30% between 2017-2022. Black-owned businesses make up 3% of all U.S. firms, while Black Americans represent about 14% of the population.
