First Black Dougherty County superintendent passes away

DOUGHERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Former Dougherty County Superintendent Dr. John Culbreath has passed away.

Culbreath passed away at 77 years of age from natural causes just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, according to Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler.

Culbreath was the first Black superintendent for Dougherty County Schools.

The Dougherty County School System shared the following statement with WALB:

“It was with a profound sense of sadness and a heavy heart that we learned of the passing of Dr. John Culbreath. His passing marks a tremendous loss, not only for the Dougherty County School System, but for the entire Albany and Southwest Georgia community.

Dr. Culbreath was a trailblazer whose leadership reached far beyond the historic nature of his appointment as the first African American superintendent of the DCSS. He was a tireless advocate for education, a passionate ambassador for our community, and a steadfast champion for children. His influence extended from classrooms and boardrooms to countless civic and community organizations. He carried himself with a dignity, integrity, and vision that defined him as a true servant leader.

Generations of students and educators were uplifted by Dr. Culbreath’s leadership, mentorship, and unwavering belief in the transformative power of public education. His accomplishments during his tenure were substantial, and his legacy of service and excellence continued long after he left office. I am deeply honored to walk in the path he helped pave.

On behalf of the Dougherty County School System, I extend our most heartfelt condolences to Dr. Culbreath’s family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. We are forever grateful for his life, his leadership, and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.”
