National Black Business Month was created in 2004 to bring attention to the needs of more than two million Black-owned businesses operating across America.
Black Business Month is celebrated annually during the month of August, as a time when individuals and businesses recognize Black-owned businesses across the country.
During Black Business Month, local government officials, community leaders and venture capitalists are encouraged to focus efforts on supporting Black-owned businesses and creating a more hospitable environment in which Black-owned businesses can grow.
The Florida Legislature has enacted laws and established programs aimed at supporting Black-owned businesses.
One notable example is the Florida Black Business Investment Act (2007), which created the Florida Black Business Investment Board, a public-private partnership focused on developing these businesses.
Additionally, the legislature has addressed issues like minority business enterprise procurement and access to capital for Black-owned businesses through initiatives like the Black Business Loan Program.
With over 20 years passed since the creation of the month, are Black-owned businesses thriving as hoped?
