CARBONDALE, Ill (WSIL) — Two upcoming film screenings in Carbondale will offer powerful portraits of resilience, history, and community within Southern Illinois’ Black community and both are free to attend.

On Friday, August 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Carbondale United Building will host a special screening of a locally focused film celebrating strength and perseverance in the Black community. The event promises free popcorn and free admission, making it an accessible and uplifting evening for all. Organizers say the night will serve as both a celebration of local history and a reminder of the power of unity.

Just weeks later, a second film will offer a deep dive into the roots of Black communities in the region. On Thursday, September 4, the African American Museum of Southern Illinois will present “Black Settlements in Southern Illinois: The Launch.” The screening will be held at First Christian Church in Carbondale, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the film starting at 6:30 p.m. Like the first event, admission is free and open to the public.

Both screenings are designed to not only entertain, but also to educate and inspire; connecting past and present through stories of endurance, innovation, and cultural pride.

Whether you’re a lifelong resident or new to the area, organizers say these events are an opportunity to reflect, learn, and honor the contributions of the Black community in Southern Illinois.
