RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Black Hills Area Community Foundation awarded the Humane Society of the Black Hills a $50,000 Community Action Grant.
The grant will help fund a new community room at the shelter that will serve a variety of purposes.
“That will help us create basically a place, a hub for the community to come in, hang out, find their forever friend. It also helps us socialize the animals for them being more adoptable as well,” Christina Owen, manager of community outreach and relations, said.
Owen said that donations like this are important for the shelter.
“We run on donations. It is our bread and butter. Without the community, we wouldn’t be in business,” Owen said.
The construction for the new addition will begin once Kitty City is completed sometime in 2026.
The Humane Society of the Black Hills will remain open during construction.
