FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Today, an opinion article was temporarily published to The Sacramento OBSERVER’s website and shared across our social media platforms (Facebook and Bluesky) that did not adhere to our long-standing editorial standards.
We deeply regret this lapse and want to assure our readers, supporters, and the entire Sacramento community that we took immediate action to remove the content once the oversight was recognized.
Upholding Our Legacy
For more than six decades, The Sacramento OBSERVER has been a cornerstone of Black journalism, built on the principles of courage and dedication championed by our founder, Dr. William H. Lee, and carried on by the Lee family and our dedicated staff. This commitment to journalistic excellence has earned us more than 800 local and national awards, including eight designations as the nation’s top Black newspaper.
The publication of this article was an isolated and deeply regrettable oversight, and it is in no way a reflection of the integrity, values, or high standards that The Sacramento OBSERVER has upheld since 1962.
Our Commitment to Action
We recognize that a public violation of our standards requires a public assurance of correction. We are taking the following immediate steps:
- Immediate Process Review: We are conducting a thorough and immediate review of our editorial and digital publishing processes to ensure all checks and balances are rigorously enforced before any content, particularly opinion pieces, is posted and shared.
- Staff Re-Briefing: Our entire team is being re-briefed on our core editorial guidelines to reinforce the high bar for quality and adherence to our ethical code.
We sincerely apologize for any breach of trust. The Sacramento OBSERVER remains committed to serving California’s capital city and our community through comprehensive journalism.
