HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and leaders at Oakwood University are doing what they can to save lives.
Oakwood University hosted a Prostate Cancer Awareness event on Sunday, where local health experts and cancer survivors shared their stories.
The message to get tested is especially important in the Black community.
The disease has a much more significant impact on Black men than on men of other ethnic groups.
“Prostate cancer is one of those things that there are really no signs or symptoms in early stages when you need to be paying attention,” Oakwood University Prostate Health Administer David McElhaney said.
“For black men in particular, this is critically important. Black men are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and 70% more likely to die from Prostate Cancer.”
Health experts recommend that every man over the age of 50 be tested once a year.
