CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A program at the Carver Recreation Center in Charlottesville honored the service and sacrifice of African American men and women who served in the US military.
The event titled, “Commemorating the African American Military Experience: Telling Our Stories,” highlighted generations of service members who contributions helped shaped the nation’s history.
The gathering aimed to preserve voices often missing from traditional narratives.
“There’s a force surrounding us that wants to eliminate us from history, and we must tell our stories,” said Maxine Holland, director of the Veterans Committee of Central Virginia. “The history of the rabbit will never be told accurately by the hunter.”
Holland says she hopes the program will encourage future generations to carry these stories forward.
