Families and healthcare professionals unite at the Black Maternal Health Fair to tackle Kentucky’s Black maternal and infant health crisis while providing resources.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Families gathered alongside healthcare professionals at the Republic Bank YMCA’s fifth annual Black Maternal Health Fair.
The event focused on maternal wellness for Black mothers and provided free health services, educational workshops and community resources.
Louisville nonprofit Granny’s Birth Initiative says the fair aimed to address Kentucky’s Black maternal health and infant health crisis.
Their mission is to improve birth outcomes through education, advocacy and access to essential maternity care.
Founder and executive director Alexa Scisney called the event important, saying it was an important opportunity to raise awareness about the resources available to Louisville families.
“We’re letting people know about our pantry families can come monthly for maternal care items. If you’re someone who’s hearing this and would like to support, we always have a high diaper need [and] we also have a transport team,” she said. “We officially have a birth team our Grannie’s Girls are now on the ground and ready to support your birth.”
GBI hosts the health fair as a community-centered initiative to expand access to birth support across the commonwealth.
