Officials in Jamaica say they expect the number of dead to rise as a result of Hurricane Melissa.
Tuesday’s hurricane wreaked havoc across the Caribbean with the eye of the storm making landfall on the southwest coast of the island, 75 miles from the capital Kingston.
Sky’s Martha Kelner spoke to those affected in St Elizabeth in Jamaica.

What it means to be a modern republic: based on the principle of self-rule, in opposition to (British colonialism) headed by a king, your own representative govt will now bear both the burdens and responsibilities that come along with governance. It means for once not using the "white man" any longer as an ideological crutch to explain away developmental shortcomings. Wow. Why was the press not barred from the flight. More supplies and medical personnel could have been on that first flight. This is why we have press pools. Utilize the pool.

Great insights on the ground Martha. On this scale, people need help to rebuild and recover, and they need it now. While governments focus on restoring infrastructure and agencies mobilise on the ground, the current system for getting direct financial aid to citizens is painfully slow.
International funds from bodies like the World Bank are bogged down by bureaucracy. Meanwhile, families are pushed to set up GoFundMe pages, where money is unevenly distributed and scammers exploit the chaos. That is a systemic failure.
We have the technology to fix this. Establish a pre-agreed disaster protocol using a simple, secure Digital ID, so verified citizens receive direct-to-citizen emergency payments within hours, not weeks.
Make this the standard across vulnerable countries and the Caribbean, with pre-funded triggers and clear rules, so people know fast, fair assistance is guaranteed when the next storm hits.
