MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Saturday marked the second day of Kwanzaa, a week-long celebration rooted in African heritage, culture, and shared values.

Across Memphis, families and community leaders reflected on the principle of “Kujichagulia,” or self-determination, and what it means beyond the holiday season.

Community leaders said self-determination is about reclaiming identity, strengthening neighborhoods, and shaping the future of Black communities year-round.

From Afro-centric attire to intergenerational conversations, organizers said Kwanzaa is becoming more visible across the city, especially for young people learning about their history. They said moments like these help reinforce unity, purpose, and responsibility while reminding the community that self-determination begins with education, awareness, and collective action.

“So I think it’s important for us to get the information that we need. And when you get the righteous information, it gives your radical and revolutionary inspiration to do some of the things that are needed to be done so we can self-determine,” said Pastor Earl Fisher.

“When you look at the history of Black churches, you know, and Black institutions: HBCU was like the mall and on the college, these are definitely instances where you’ve seen Black people gather our resources and our human capital, our social capital, our intellectual capital, and create these institutions that have allowed us safe and sacred space to gather and learn what we need,” Fisher said.

Organizers said Kwanzaa continues through January 1, with each day highlighting a different principle focused on community, culture, and collective responsibility.
