Cologne library celebrates proud Black heritage – DW – 01/07/2026

The shocking death of George Floyd while in police custody in May 2020 was the catalyst for starting Cologne’s first Black-led library.

Glenda Obermuller co-founded the Theodor Wonja Michael Library, named after the man who was probably Germany’s first Black public civil servant. For young and old, it’s much more than a place to find books: it celebrates the Black
community, which has been historically under-represented in Germany.
