A federal jury has found a Prosper couple guilty of orchestrating a pyramid scheme that defrauded more than 10,000 people out of $25 million during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to NBCDFW.
Marlon and LaShonda Moore were convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and money laundering following a four-day trial in Sherman. Federal prosecutors said the couple ran a program called “Blessings in No Time,” or BINT, specifically targeting the African American community.
The pair appeared on the OWN reality series “Family or Fiancé,” which follows engaged couples as they navigate family conflict ahead of potential marriages, the show’s website said.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice indictment, the Moores “targeted the African American community during the COVID-19 pandemic with false and misleading statements and promises regarding high returns” to “unlawfully enrich themselves.”
The couple now faces potential decades in federal prison. Sentencing dates have not yet been set.
Rosetta Fleming, one of the program’s participants, told NBCDFW that she and her husband invested over $6,000 and never received a payout or promised refund. She said participants were placed on “playing boards” and instructed to recruit others with guarantees of being financially “blessed” at each level.
“We were just played. We were played with our feelings. We were promised the money; we didn’t get it,” Fleming said. “We didn’t look at it like it was a gamble. We looked at it like it was something out there that could help us pay the bills, feed our children.”
The criminal conviction adds to years of legal troubles for the Moores, NBCDFW noted.
In 2023, a civil case brought by the Texas Attorney General’s Office resulted in a $10.76 million judgment against them. It is unclear how much, if any, of that judgment has been paid.
An attorney for Marlon Moore said he presented evidence that the couple attempted to fix the program after it began to spiral, but the jury disagreed.
