MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus held a ceremony at the state Capitol Tuesday to officially kick off congressional programming in honor of Black History Month.

Legislators and community members gathered for the afternoon event, which celebrated the contributions of African Americans in Wisconsin and nationwide. The ceremony marked the third day of Black History Month.

Members of the caucus emphasized that Black history is American history.

“When we look at where the African American communities come from and our history in this state, and also in the country — I think it helps us to realize just how far we’ve come, but that we also have farther to go,” said Sen. LaTonya Johnson, who represents District 6.

Dora Drake, chair of the Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus, said the programming challenges people to examine the complete story of American history.

“I’d say it challenges us to see the true story of who we are — the good, the bad and the ugly,” Drake said. “And that’s what we’re celebrating here today. For America and our state, Wisconsin, to really move forward, we have to acknowledge all of those things.”

The caucus is preparing for Black Advocacy Day, scheduled for Feb. 26. The annual event brings lawmakers and the public together to address issues that impact local Black communities.
