South Florida PBS Celebrates Black History Month with an Array of Powerful February Programming

South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL, and the Health Channel) proudly announces its February schedule of premieres, featuring powerful storytelling in celebration of Black History Month, compelling documentaries, immersive cultural experiences, family programming, and essential health content. The February lineup also includes new seasons of Antiques Roadshow and Finding Your Roots, along with new episodes of Nature and NOVA.

South Florida PBS is also proud to spotlight Titanic-themed programming in conjunction with its newest immersive exhibition, Titanic: An Immersive Voyage.

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS:

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

February programming on South Florida PBS honors Black history, culture, and resilience through extraordinary stories of courage, creativity, and community.

Leading the month is Black & Jewish America: An Interwoven History, airing Tuesdays at 9PM on WPBT and Thursdays at 8PM on WXEL. This four-part series explores the shared history of Black and Jewish Americans marked by solidarity during the Civil Rights Movement and shaped by ongoing challenges revealing how two communities forged lasting civic and cultural bonds.

Additional Black History Month highlights include:

Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom (Monday, February 2 at 10PM on WPBT), offering a deeper look at the fearless woman whose leadership and faith helped guide countless people to freedom.
Making Black America (Thursday, February 5 at 9PM on WXEL), with Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. examining the social institutions and networks built by Black communities beyond the white gaze.
American Masters – The Disappearance of Miss Scott (Tuesday, February 10 at 10PM on WPBT), chronicling the life of Hazel Scott a jazz prodigy, a television pioneer, and a civil rights activist.
Becoming Frederick Douglass (Monday, February 16 at 10PM on WPBT), a powerful documentary from filmmaker Stanley Nelson capturing the legacy of one of America’s most influential voices for freedom.
Raise Your Head Up: Freedom Colonies in America (Monday, February 16 at 11PM on WPBT; Thursday, February 26 at 9PM on WXEL), spotlighting post–Civil War communities founded by formerly enslaved people seeking self-determination and safety.

Antiques Roadshow: Georgia State Railroad Museum (Monday, February 2 at 8PM on WPBT), showcasing remarkable appraisals tied to Savannah’s history. • Nature: Parenthood (Wednesdays at 8PM | WPBT; Sundays at 8PM on WXEL), narrated by Sir David Attenborough, exploring the extraordinary lengths animals go to raise their young.
NOVA: Can Dogs Talk? (Wednesday, February 4 at 9PM on WPBT), investigating whether dogs using word buttons truly understand language.
Secrets of the Dead: The Quest for Camelot (Wednesday, February 4 at 10PM | WPBT; Sunday, February 8 at 10PM on WXEL), exploring the historical roots of Arthurian legend.

February brings exceptional music and performance to South Florida PBS with a trio of Great Performances specials. The Magic of Grace Bumbry (Sunday, February 8 at 2PM on WXEL) traces the extraordinary rise of the trailblazing soprano who shattered racial barriers and transformed the world of opera.

Opera lovers can also enjoy Great Performances at the Met: Carmen (Sunday, February 22 at Noon on WXEL), a bold, contemporary reimagining of the classic story directed by Carrie Cracknell, exploring modern themes of power and social inequality.

The month concludes with Great Performances – Movies for Grownups Awards with AARP The Magazine (Sunday, February 22 at 7PM on WPBT; Wednesday, February 25 at 9:30PM on WXEL), a star-studded celebration honoring films and filmmakers whose work resonates with mature audiences, hosted by Alan Cumming.

South Florida PBS continues its commitment to early learning with new and returning favorites:

Phoebe & Jay, a new preschool series airing weekdays on WPBT and WXEL, introduces early literacy through the everyday texts children see in their world. • KidVision Dance Time – Musical Theater Dance, with Miss Penny getting kids moving through creative storytelling and dance.

Families are invited to Be My Neighbor Day on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 11AM– 1PM at the St. Lucie County Morningside Branch Library.
