TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – For the past 50 years Black History month has been observed in February.

Inside the Texas African American Museum in Tyler, exhibits feature notable African Americans from Tyler and the surrounding region.

This includes community leaders like Henry Morgan, as well as athletes such as Patrick Mahomes and Earl Campbell.

Another includes is Robert Taylor, a graduate of the former Emmett Scott High School which used to be a segregated school. The purpose behind it is to educate others about its history.

“The main takeaway is that this is a month that we remember Black History month, but that it happens every day,” says Denise Pendleton, a volunteer at the Texas African American Museum. ”And so I think it’s just a way for the community to come together and try to get a deeper understanding of what African-Americans have contributed to this community and to our nation.“

Black History Month began as a week-long observance in 1926 and became a national month-long recognition in 1976.
