WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – POEM Christian Center is highlighting Black History Month through a special community display.

Senior Pastor Romeo Montez III said the exhibit focuses on three main goals: teaching visitors, inspiring young people, and sparking conversations that continue well beyond Black History Month.

“One of the things we tried to do was embody Haggai 2:15, which said, ‘consider from this day and upward.’ Literally what that means is to paint a picture where you come from,“ Montez III said.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month.

Montez said moments like this are about remembering the journey of Black brothers and sisters who came before us.

As an old proverb reminds us, “if you don’t remember where you came from, you won’t know where you’re going.”

“You’ll come in this room and see the past, present and future. In particular, you’ll see the great artists of our day from Black culture. You’ll see legal leaders, presidents, musicians and inventors who created many of the things we use today,“ Montez III said.

He said it all comes down to three things: faith, culture and community.

Those values, he believes, help people across Wichita Falls better understand and appreciate one another.

“You’ve got something to achieve, something to strive for. A lot of people paved the way and sacrificed. Now we can look back with pride in those who came before us. As a people, as a culture, we have a powerful history, one we can continue to build on,“ Montez III said.
