A celebration of local black history Sunday invited guests to tour the Charlotte S. Rhone cultural center in New Bern.

The tour honored individuals and leaders who have contributed to New Berns culture and development, with the local history dating back to the 1800’s the building now serves as a museum and headquarters for the New Bern Climbers Club, a womens organization founded in the Jim Crow era, today President Nanette Sanders Cobb says, they are honoring history.

The original purpose of the building was to educate blacks that lived in New Bern. There was a school, West Street School, but there was no library. By 1947 the building was open to have a library that black students could attend.
