On March 4, 2026, in partnership with Illinois Soul, the Community Outreach and Engagement Division, along with the Race Relations Subcommittee, hosted a community film screening and discussion featuring the documentary Black and Jewish in America: An Interwoven History. The film, narrated by Henry Louis Gates Jr., explores the longstanding relationship between Black and Jewish communities in the United States, highlighting shared histories, collaborations, and challenges from the past through the present day.

Approximately 24 community members attended the event. Guests were invited to enjoy a light meal while watching the film, creating a welcoming space for learning and conversation. The documentary provided a historical overview of the ways in which Black and Jewish communities have intersected throughout American history, including moments of solidarity during the Civil Rights Movement as well as the cultural and social contributions of both groups.

Following the screening, attendees participated in a thoughtful discussion about the themes presented in the film and reflected on how those histories continue to shape relationships between Black and Jewish communities today. Participants also discussed the current state of these communities locally and explored ways to continue fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and collaboration within the community.

Events like this film screening support the Community Outreach and Engagement Division’s ongoing efforts to promote meaningful conversations, strengthen relationships across cultures, and encourage community members to engage with one another around shared histories and experiences.
