DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Governor Kay Ivey has proclaimed October 2025 as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Month in Alabama, recognizing the impact of HBCUs on education, workforce development, and culture across the state.

According to the proclamation, Alabama is home to 14 HBCUs, the largest number of any state in the nation. The document highlights their role in providing exceptional educational opportunities for African American students and their contributions to preparing graduates for leadership in multiple fields including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The proclamation also acknowledges the Alabama HBCU Co-Op Program, created under the state Office of Minority Affairs, which works to strengthen HBCU institutions by focusing on visibility, sustainability, and economic impact.

Governor Ivey noted that HBCUs serve as “a pipeline of diverse talent” for Alabama’s workforce while also preserving cultural and historical traditions.

With this recognition, the state of Alabama formally observes HBCU Month throughout October 2025, encouraging citizens to support and honor the role of these institutions in advancing education and community growth.
