The People’s Market, a Black-owned cafe and cocktail bar, announced on Instagram that it will be closing both its locations in Elizabeth and Meyer’s Park.
Owner Cory Duran said there is no single reason for the decision but noted the financial stress of running both stores to their “full potential” in the “current environment.
Duran noted other challenges such as broken equipment, HVAC repairs, an electrical fire and the rising cost of labor.
Duran also said the most recent government shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, caused a delay in an opportunity for “much-needed capital” from the Small Business Administration.
“The sum of all these parts just made it too much for me to handle alone. It hurts me to my core to be forced to make this difficult decision as I tried everything to make it work,” Duran said in the post.
This is a developing story. Check back later for more details.
